Jonah and the big fish
This is the most famous illumination from the antiphoner showing Jonah escaping from the mouth of the ‘big fish’. The biggest fish in this part of the world is a pike (Esox lucius L.) and this may be what is depicted here in the middle of a letter ‘S’ for Salvum “Save me, O God, for the waters are come in, even into my soul ” Psalm 69.
