The nativity of Mary
September 8th has been observed for centuries as the birthday of Mary, the mother of Jesus. This miniature shows a bare breasted St Anne, Mary’s mother, in a Tudor style bed being attended by a midwife in contemporary dress. Notice how the baby is tightly swaddled in bands of cloth and how it was the fashion to wear a nightcap in bed.
